Therefore, rulers of near and distant kingdoms acknowledged their supremacy In Pataliputra, the capital of Magadh, there were very rich people but a section in the society was poor. Among these poor people a maid servant named Mura lived. She was deputed to look after the golden peacocks in the royal palace. She supported herself and her child Chandragupta with whatever she got for this work. One day Dhananand became displeased with the father of Chandragupta, and got him killed. Mura had to face many problems after the death of her husband, but she did not lose courage. She supported herself with the salary she received from the king.
Several years passed, Chandragupta had now become five years old. He was growing up, and so was his power of reasoning. Mura thought, “It is better to give my son to someone than to let him starve At least he will get food to his content. Emperor Dhananand was very of hunting. He used to go to the forest to hunt lion, deer etc. So, he had kept hundreds of hunters in his court. They used to go with him to the forest. Making herself hard-hearted, Mura gave her dear son to a hunter. She thought that by living with the hunters he would learn the tricks of nunting and would become a good hunter while growing young. Then she would take her brave son to the king who would give him a good job. Then her old age would pass happily
