Some Commonly Used Idioms
1. Piece of cake –
Meaning : a very easy thing
Example -
I like Mathematics and so the homework was a piece of cake for me.
2. Costs an arm and a leg
Meaning : very expensive, costs a lot of money
Example -
His new car cost an arm and a leg.
A: Do you want to go to that shopping mall?
B: No
A: Why not?
B: Because everything there costs an arm and a leg. It’s too expensive for a student like me.
3. Hit the books –
Meaning : Study with concentrated effort.
Example -
At exam time, we all hit the books.
He had a fear of failing, so he used to return home early and hit the books.
